i have a career crisis every other month. i'm having one right now. i've been having the most frustrating time with this crime article- my instructions? go out. find a crime. get the police to talk to you, find the victim (whose name the police WILL NOT reveal), talk to THEM, and write your story. in a week. and if your police don't talk to you... find another city. find another story! so basically, you have three days to work with, and an iffy weekend, because it's harder to reach EVERYONE on weekends.
i called the police so many times. left so many messages with this one detective in takoma park, then called the pg police out of desperation and got LAUGHED AT. LAUGHED AT. absolutely like... haha you're a n00b-type laughing. i AM new, okay? i've never covered a crime before in real life. i've never NOT had a press release, NOT been able to go to the scene (because i don't have a car). he laughed at me, the police press guy, and was like... haha we don't give out the names of detectives or victims. you should be able to get this by yourself. well fucking... i am NOT a full time reporter. and no i didn't know you couldn't give me this information. and i don't even know if you're just fucking with me. but i'm a student, and i'm new, and i'm just trying to do my best not to fail out of journalism, even though I don't know if this is really what I want to do.
all those reasons. i love to travel, i love to write... i've been spewing them for so long i don't know if they're real or just reasons i made up and have been saying for long enough that i've fooled even myself.
but what else can i do? nothing. which is why i'm here. in this unpredictable job.
where i cry when the police tell me i suck. that better just be because i'm on my period and emotional as hell, because otherwise... i'm not tough enough at all for this business.
